DAVY RUSSELL Navan Saturday

first_img[dropcap]N[/dropcap]avan and Thurles this weekend and testing ground is forecast at both courses.Navan tweeted out earlier that the ground is heavy (modelled by yours truly) and the country would shut down before a meeting at Thurles was ever lost to the weather.I was out and about earlier today and although the roads remain dangerous the grass didn’t freeze. I can vouch for how bitterly cold it is though.Saturday’s thoughts below and as usual I’ll be back late Saturday afternoon with my views on Sunday’s racing.SaturdayNAVANSTOOSHIE 12.25pmDelighted to see him win his maiden hurdle in Down Royal on St Stephen’s Day and gain reward for being so consistent. He showed good battling qualities on heavy ground that day and will need more of the same here in what looks a much tougher race. Gordon’s (Elliott) Veneer Of Charm is out again quickly after finishing second to me on Mitchouka at Fairyhouse on Sunday. He gets all the allowances as a four-year-old and will get more vital experience in this. The JP owned pair Gran Geste and Spades Are Trumps were both narrow winners last time out and look progressive.ROUNDSTONE 1.00pmCame home clear in a point to point at Borris House when his main rival fell at the second last, he jumped well and looks a nice prospect. He’s a lovely big horse who is likely to need every yard of this – if not more in time and we’ll know much more about him today. Big danger might well be Antey who is stepping up in trip after a promising third on debut at Leopardstown over Christmas. Whatever Roundstone does today he is certainly one for the future.SWINGBRIDGE 2.10pmThis looks a wide open contest with 17 runners. My fella is stepping back in trip following his third over fences to Capture The Drama over 3m 1f at Fairyhouse on New Year’s Day. He never runs a bad race but has gradually crept up the weights and become a victim of his own success. However he does remain on a better mark over the smaller obstacles.CLARENCE HOUSE CHASE (3.35pm Ascot)No awards for originality here but I’m firmly with Un De Sceaux completing his hat-trick. This is a huge task for a novice and Brain Power made a couple of mistakes before unseating in the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown. He’ll find it pretty tough stopping Un De Sceaux landing a hat-trick here.YOUR SAYALISTAIR MILROY: Was there a problem with Poker Party today (14 Jan) Davy? I just wondered why you did not ride it from about 3 out?DAVY: He got very tired and I think the combination of the step up trip and class was a shock to the system. I expect we may seem him next over a shorter distance. If you have a question for Davy drop us a line at content@www.starsportsbet.co.uk and we’ll try and include in the next blog…BET WITH STAR SPORTS 08000 521 321last_img
