He will report to deputy editor Shapiro. Sources close to situation tell Folio: that larger changes will be happening across Time Inc. editorial in the upcoming days, but for the time-being all that’s been announced is the major editorial revamping of TIME magazine and Fortune. Time Inc. editorial restructuring is finally coming to fruition, months after the publishing giant reimagined its upper management and set the groundwork for cross-title initiatives, including streamlined digital desks. O’Connor, who was health director, joined TIME in 2014. Her role as executive editor will be to “expand our coverage of issues that stretch beyond the political realm, from social trends and ideas to health, food, science, religion and relationships,” according to the staff memo. The third assistant managing editor promotion, Howorth, will run Ideas and Motto. Howorth comes from her role as editorial director of Ideas for the magazine. Howorth will report to O’Connor. Vella, who was assistant managing editor, will continue “managing the flow of enterprise stories in print and online.” He will lead the arts and entertainment, business, and technology sections. Nusca confirmed to Folio: that there will not be a deputy digital editor moving forward. He also confirmed that the status of “Fortune Unfiltered,” the weekly podcast launched by Task in July, is yet undecided.   Reporting to Vella are culture editor Isaac Guzman, and Hollywood editor Sam Lansky, as well as critics and culture reporters. At TIME, the editorial shakeup was primarily promotional. In a memo to staff sent Tuesday afternoon, editor-in-chief Nancy Gibbs and editor of digital Edward Felsenthanl wrote, “TIME is rich with talent at every level of the organization. As we say goodbye to some colleagues, we welcome others and are excited to promote the next generation of TIME leadership.” Kelly Conniff, Ben Goldberger, and Claire Howorth were all named assistant managing editors. The second assistant managing editor promotion, Goldberger, will oversee national coverage, sports and special projects such as Person of the Year. Goldberger, formerly nation editor, will report to executive editor O’Connor. Aaron Task is out as digital editor at Fortune. He is replaced by Andrew Nusca, formerly deputy digital editor. Task joined the brand last year from his role as editor-in-chief of Yahoo Finance. Gibbs will continue on as EIC of TIME, as well as in her role as editorial director of the Time Inc. news group, consisting of TIME, Fortune, Money, Time for Kids, and Motto. Under Conniff is Eliza Berman, promoted to deputy culture editor from her role as associate editor, as well as Alex Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick, formerly deputy tech editor, is now the TIME lifestyle editor, focused on travel, food, leisure and the intersection of technology and daily life. Eben Shapiro was hired as deputy editor of TIME from his position as global arts editor at The Wall Street Journal. Shapiro will work alongside Michael Duffy, who will continue in his role as deputy managing editor of TIME, as well as his role as editorial director of Time Inc. Duffy answers to chief content officer Alan Murray. Siobhan O’Connor and Matt Vella were promoted to executive editor. They join Sam Jacobs, who was named executive editor last month and will continue to run the day-to-day operations of Time.com. Radhika Jones, deputy managing editor since 2013, left TIME at the beginning of November to join The New York Times as editorial director of books.  Conniff, formerly features director, will work on cross-title initiatives across Time Inc.’s lifestyle brands, in addition to managing digital entertainment and newsfeed coverage.
