Last week the Liberian Senate passed a bill targeted at curtailing the eligibility of the Central Bank Governor to run for political office come 2017.It is clear that members of the Senate and the House of Representatives, some of whom may have political ambitions of their own, are petrified at the prospect of Dr. J. Mills Jones running for president. What Dr. Jones has done for the Liberian economy in empowering Liberian businesses has made him a rising star. But instead of strategizing to compete and win or lose honorably on substance (issues), the cowardly legislators have chosen to attempt to disqualify him – albeit unconstitutionally – so as not to have to compete with him man to man.Lawmakers are panicking, and the man has not even declared his intention to run! They have not only targeted Mills Jones but the entire CBL Board of Governors and its executives. Indeed, great minds think alike. Dr. Jones could not have done half of what he has accomplished without the unwavering support of his Board and executives. The late Theo Bettie comes to mind. As such, the Legislature has covered it bases well – or so it thinks.Besides the glaring bulls eye at Dr. Jones and the obvious unconstitutionality of the Senate’s decision (which legal experts believe will undoubtedly be challenged in the High Court), greater and deeper issues than Mills Jones are at stake: the trajectory of the Liberian economy and the nation as a whole are at stake! This is where the ‘foundational work’ often touted by this administration becomes extremely important. With the help of Liberia’s international partners, this administration, for all of its weaknesses, has sought to strengthen the institutions that undergird a solid and functioning democracy. Good governance and the rule of law, for example, are two key pillars. This administration has not been perfect, but it has made a good start. This is the foundation upon which the next administration will have to build with the continued support of our partners. But not if the current Legislature has anything to do with it. The Code of Conduct bill is already no doubt a bitter pill to swallow, a sign of things to come. A Mills Jones administration would only run with this straight to the finish line. They have to put a stop to this.”Gentlemen, ehn yor know ehn? We know how to twist and turn with the way things are right now. We can’t sit here for the people to come make us wear strait jacket. So we got to put stop to this ting here.””Hear, hear!””The way Mills Jones doin this ting, it lo leh he wan run for president.””Hmmm!””So, yor leh decide how to handle it.”We are certain that our readers get the idea. Many Legislators are people who only know how to operate in a lawless (or secret) society. Each man for himself; God for all. There is yet another question to be asked, however. Who else stands to benefit from this decision — that is willing to pay top dollar to block the onward march to development? Foreign businesses perhaps, who will not welcome the competition, let alone the Liberianization of the entire economy. And we are not just talking about Monrovia-based foreign merchants who are crippling the Liberian economy and undermining Liberian businesses; who are bringing in cheaply acquired expired goods and selling them at a premium. These merchants are terribly worried. They know that if an incoming administration continues on the current trajectory, their profit margins are threatened, their days in control numbered. We also mean multinationals who will not be happy to see the rules enforced, whistle-blower NGOs given face, and environmental best practices applied. Do-nothing NGOs, rubber, logging, mining and oil companies — this is a huge and very wealthy lobby. We call upon every Liberian to protest in every way other than violence against this bill; to stand up and let their lawmakers know that for their selfish attempt to limit the choices of the electorate, it is THEIR (lawmakers’) days that are numbered. Tick, tock! The law being proposed by the Senate MUST be vigorously and successfully resisted. Every conscientious and patriotic Liberian and the entire Civil Society must get involved in challenging, in the Supreme Court, the Senate’s shameful and cowardly act.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)

All garda officers are to show up to work tomorrow following a decision in the eleventh hour of the strike crisis.A last-minute announcement has been made by the Garda Representative Association to say that they are suspending all strike action.Friday’s industrial action has been cancelled as GRA representatives take time to consider the Labour Court recommendations issued this evening. As a result, the walkout originally planned for tomorrow morning by gardai of various rankings has been deferred until further notice.Garda sergeants and inspectors had decided to call off their strike earlier tonight in the wake of the Labour Court findings, now the 10,000 rank-and-file gardai in Ireland will also report for duty tomorrow as normal. All garda stations across Donegal are expected to open, while emergency services and regular garda peacekeeping duties will be carried out.The Labour Court had today sought to resolve the dispute between Gardai and the government over pay restoration and conditions. The GRA had said in a statement last night that any non-binding recommendation from the Labour Court would be put to members for a ballot. As voting continues, the strike has officially been suspended. The issue will also be addressed at its upcoming Consumer Best Practices Meeting, January 25-26 in Boca Raton, Florida.Compared with the $25 billion online ad industry, the mobile marketing industry is still in its infancy. It won’t reach $1 billion until 2012, reported AdWeek, citing data from eMarketer. “If we’d seen how fast mobile Internet and apps were going to grow, maybe we would have stepped in sooner,” Stuart told AdWeek.[Author’s Note: if they had seen how fast it would grow? Were they not watching?]?There’s no timeline for the completion of the new policy, Stuart said. “It’s more important that we get it done right. This release was a call to arms.”A Need to Address Mobile Privacy Concerns This issue was recently in the forefront of people’s minds, thanks to a Wall St. Journal series called “What They Know,” that highlighted the growing lack of privacy in today’s digital world. One piece in particular (“Your Apps are Watching You“) dealt with mobile privacy. The Journal found that, after an examination of 101 popular smartphone applications on iPhone and Android devices, 56 transmitted the phone’s unique device ID to other companies without the user’s awareness or consent. 47 also transmitted location and 5 sent age, gender and other personal details.Counterpoint: Tracking is GOODThe somewhat overly paranoid reporting from The WSJ was met with some backlash online, especially from the tech blogging community. In a post entitled “Hello, My Name is: 9649e796e8b23900dc9629a18f2d47306430e62f,” BGR blogger Andrew Munchbach made a convincing argument that mobile tracking isn’t really all that bad. (The headline referred to his UDID, the unique device identifier that’s used to build an online profile of a device, and therefore, the user). “I’m not all that concerned with third parties, even advertisers, knowing the age, gender, UDID, and/or the general (or even specific) location of my device’s end-user (that’s me),” Munchbach wrote. “So Rovio, the maker of Angry Birds, knows that the dude using my mobile device is, um, a dude, was stuck on level 5-13 for six straight hours, and was in Newport, RI when this all occurred. So the game looked through my address book to see if there were contacts that were also playing Angry Birds with whom I could connect. I kind of like these features,” he said.He also said that even when that data is passed to an analytics company, it’s used – anonymously – to provide useful usage statistics and intelligence. “Rovio can use this information to improve its product, which would seem like a benefit to me, the player. Heck, Flurry may even go one step further and use this information in its own reporting and assessment of the mobile industry or publish a report about it…still doesn’t trouble me all that much. Why should it? It’s an age, gender, and ever-changing location that is linked to a number that represents a mobile device.”…But Some Want to Opt-Out & Today You Can’tWhile in Munchbach’s case, the tracking is seen in a positive light, there are some who would prefer the option to opt-out, as you can in most of today’s modern desktop-based Web browsers, through the use of built-in tools like privacy/”incognito” modes, browser add-ons and extensions and even alternative search portals that promise no tracking.WSJ polled its readers on the matter, and a majority (67.7%), said they want apps to tell them every time they collect and send info about their mobile device. Clearly, these voters were worked about about the idea, having just read the article. Apps that constantly nagged you if and when they could share information would be worse than Windows Vista’s User Account Control security feature which seemed to ask you every single time you tried to make the simplest change on your PC.Still, the mobile world, as of yet, does not have any such opt-out options. It’s all or nothing – use the app, or don’t. But if you do, you’re agreeing to certain conditions. The MMA’s influence may help to create new scenarios here that will better serve mobile users, not just with regard to apps, but for all sorts of mobile ads, including SMS text messages, in-app banner advertising and ads on the mobile Web itself. You can Zoom and Pan inside of the Curve Graph. If you hold down ALT while moving the points they will snap to the graph and move in whole numbers.Save and load a Bevel Profile by selecting the 3D Text Node, going in to Node Prefs for Action, and then Load or Save by going to the Text option. This only saves the Bevel and not the other properties. The Geometry Menu gives you access to the base material properties of the Text (Diffuse, Specular, & Ambient Colors), as well as blending modes, and transparency. You also have settings for how the Text reacts to lights within the scene. You can force to shade Both Front & Back, or just Front, or just Back. This can come in handy when you also have transparency with the Text as it can hide the back polygons. The Shine value will create Specular Highlights on the geometry as light hits it. Geometry can be set to Cast+Receives Shadows, Casts Only, Receives, Only, and No Shadow, or to just create a Shadow Only. Shadow Only mode is quite useful, as it will hide the physical geometry and just display its shadow. Use it to enhance your scene by adding shadows without having to clutter it up with seen objects as it acts as a shadow projector. The Char Axis Menu is used to animate the Text on a per character basis (you have access to the similar transform controls found in the Axis node). Although you can freely move the center axis of rotation, there are pop-up buttons for quickly setting it to various points in X & Y. These may misalign your text however if you are using upper/lowercase text, as the ascenders/descenders mess things up.The Master Character slider sets which character the animation begins on, and the cascade will offset the animation by frames. You can also set the direction of the cascade to travel in various directions left & right. Smoke makes it easy to create some quick and easy text animations.Since you can keyframe the Cascade Value and the Master Character, you can create some unique animations. You can speed up the cascade or change the point of cascade throughout the animation with the Master Character. There are several 3D Text Preset Animations that you can load to give you a good base for your text animations.Drag up a Preset Node from the Action Bin and it will display the 3D Texts Presets to load in a nice visual layout:You can apply different UV Mappings to the 3D Text. This applies to any Diffuse Map Textures appled to the 3D Text. You can choose from the standard UV wrap selections. And if needed, you can use the UV transform controls. This is not like the general Position Axis controls on the Diffuse Map, as the UV controls actually transform the UV Coordinates along the surface. The Tessellation Menu can help improve the wireframe mesh of the 3D Text by tiling geometric shapes across the surfaces. Standard (GLU) is the simplest method but is also the least precise. It is the default setting for 3D Text, and works for most purposes. Some font styles may require you to select one of the other methods (Delaunay & Medial Axis). These both have additional settings to improve the quality of the geometry which will provide for better shading, and displacement. You can view the original wireframe as well as the modified one to see the improvements. Now that you have your 3D text extruded, beveled, and animated you can texture your text by adding a Diffuse Map and/or a Reflection Map (Note: you can add texture maps at anytime in the 3D Text creation). Mapping textures requires a separate blog post of it’s own, so look for that coming soon. However, there are a few other notable functions of 3D Text to be aware of:Your HWAA settings under CFX Setup will greatly improve the quality of your 3D Text edges. It is recommended that you always enable HWAA with at least a setting of 4x. I personally use 8x. This is hardware AA and therefore won’t impact rendering time.Under the 3D Text Menu button, you will find the the Ridged Text option. Normally when you attach a 3D Text with a 3D Path to create text on a path, the characters will bend along the path. If for some reason you don’t want the characters to separate and you want the entire word to move as one, then you can enable the Ridged Text option. You can’t kern the characters of the text easily with 3D Text. If you need to kern your text, you can click the Separate Button. This will split out your text characters into a set of Axis, Offset, and Geom. These will all be connected to several control axis. The original GEOM created will also be retained and it will become hidden. This is a nice safety in case you want to return back to the original. Now that the characters are separated you can animate the text characters at will.Click image for larger view:Note: If you plan on using the Char Axis menu for animation and text cascading, you need to do this before you use Separate. After separation the Char Axis and Cascade properties and timings will be retained, but any adjustments in this menu will no longer be tied to the separated text. If you need to make adjustments, you need to delete the separated nodes and unhide the original GEOM.One other ‘gotcha’ is that if you adjusted the Centre Axis via the pop-up buttons in the Char Axis menu, it will revert to normal positions (Bottom,Center) when you Separate. This will alter the animation slightly. You will have to reset it for each character afterwards or it would be better to set the centre via the centre axis controls. To get the most out of 3D Text, you can use fonts that aren’t letters. You can load Windings fonts or download some shape fonts, like snowflakes or ornament fonts and create some quick and easy 3D shapes inside Action for motion graphic design. In the upcoming blog post on texture maps, I’ll show you how to use some simple 3D Text Shapes in motion graphic design. I hope this post sheds some light on the functionality of 3D Text inside Autodesk Smoke.Got questions or comments? We’d love to hear them! Feel free to post below. This makes the the left side of the bevel the Front of the Text and the right side is the Back.Normally I will create a simple bevel by adding a point and adjusting the points, as shown. However you can also create some very complex bevels for a more creative and personalized text look. In this post we share the secrets of the 3D Text node inside of Smoke’s Action. Create impressive 3D text! You can easily create extruded 3D Text within Action, Autodesk Smoke’s true 3D compositing node. It’s simple enough. Double click or drag the 3D Text Node into your Action schematic or scene. The text comes in as the word “Text” on screen. Let’s take a look at the Properties Tab, which will allow you to customize this text for your needs. The Properties Tab contains 5 Sub Menus: 3D Text, Geometry, Character Axis, UV Map, and Tessellation. The 3D Text Menu is where the Text attributes are applied in Smoke. Each 3D Text Node can only create 1 line of text (although that line can be quite long). The limit is 999 characters. In the font name field you can choose the font style you would like, which takes you to the same font selection as the 2D text.Since all text is treated as vectors, this makes it easy for Smoke to extrude it into 3D. The rest of the properties are standard text features: Kerning, Size, Italic, and of course the Depth setting, which sets the depth of the extrusion in pixels.Text is extruded from the center out in both positive & negative Z space. Once the text is extruded, your attention can be turned to the Bevel Profile Graph. The Bevel Profile settings work like many of the the other Curve Graph Functions in Smoke. You can Add and Move points at will and Break Tangents to get a sharp point. When you create a curve on the graph, that is the shape that the Text will take when seen from the Side View.Click image for larger view:

NYON: The clubs involved in this season’s Champions League and Europa League group stages invested more than half of their transfer spending in the last window on players aged 24 and under, a report by European soccer body UEFA said on Thursday. UEFA’s club competition report said the 80 clubs spent a combined $3.98 billion in the summer window, with 43 percent of them breaking their own transfer records. But instead of splurging on more experienced players, they spent a record 64 percent of that money on players aged 24 or younger, and only 7 percent went on those over 28. Also Read – Puducherry on top after 8-wkt win over ChandigarhDefenders and forwards each made up 35 percent of expenditure, midfielders 25 percent and goalkeepers 5 percent, it said. But while spending was high, clubs were also busy selling players, and transfer earnings totalled an estimated 3.72 billion euros. Many clubs outside the main leagues, in countries such as Switzerland, Portugal and the Netherlands, now have a financial model based on buying young players, developing their talent and then selling them on to bigger clubs several years later. Also Read – Vijender’s next fight on Nov 22, opponent to be announced laterUEFA said that six clubs managed net earnings of over 50 million euros in their summer transfer dealings. The report also illustrated the disparity in spending power between clubs, when it said that clubs had spent anything between 250,000 euros and 953 million euros in assembling their current squads. Other stats showed that Portugal has nine of the 80 coaches involved, a large number given the country’s size and population. That is followed by Spain with seven, Germany with six and Netherlands, Italy and France with five apiece. England has only two coaches involved. Ajax Amsterdam were the most prolific scoring team with 3.5 goals per game in winning the Eredivisie, and Shakhtar Donetsk had the stingiest defence with just 0.34 goals conceded per game. Around Europe, English Premier League champions Manchester City were the fourth-most dominant team in their own league last season with 2.58 per points per game. The mantle of the most dominant team of all, however, went to the mighty guns of HB Torshavn of the Faroe Islands league, who averaged 2.70 points per game with their domestic record of 24 wins, one draw and two defeats last season.
