Nausori International Airport Upgrade And Extension Project Groundbreaking Ceremony

first_imgThe ground-breaking ceremony for Fiji Airports’ Nausori International Airport Upgrade and Runway Extension Project will be carried out by Prime Minister the Voreqe Bainimarama. The project worth millions involves the expansion of airport facilitiess and includes the construction of a bigger runway and a new terminal.Mr Bainimarama had earlier highlighted at a talanoa session at the Mahadevi Temple at Vuci, Nausori, that the deal to extend the runway at the Nausori International Airport had been done and approved by Fiji Airports, the Lands Department, iTaukei Lands Trust Board (TLTB) and the land-owners.Attorney-General and Minister responsible for Civil Aviation, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, had earlier highlighted that the largest aircraft that lands at Nausori Airport is the Boeing 737-800 that has direct flights to Sydney and also to Auckland. However, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said this aircraft actually flies not a full load because of the length of the runway. The current runway length he said was about 1868 metres long and 30 metres wide. The ideal length for the Boeing 737 operational on full load capacity, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said, was 2100 metres, so this was why all these years when it had been flying it did not take the full load because it needed a longer runway. In July, Fiji Airports successfully commissioned the new Instrument Landing System (ILS)/Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) at the Nadi International Airport.Fiji became the first country outside of Europe to make the transition from a operating ILS to a new ILS/DME with zero downtime.Fiji Airports executive chairman Faiz Khan noted that the installation of the ILS/DME at Nausori Airport will be completed after the runway is extended by 2020.The post Nausori International Airport Upgrade And Extension Project Groundbreaking Ceremony appeared first on Discover the South Pacific.Source: Bloglast_img read more
