Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls were in a militant mood yesterday, as they rebounded from the disappointment of their Pool B defeat to England in the 2015 Netball World Cup in Australia to dispatch Scotland 71-24 in a one-sided affair. The result meant Jamaica (four points) finished second behind England (six points) in Pool B. The two nations advanced to the second round (Pool E), where Jamaica played against New Zealand earlier this morning, and are to face Uganda and Malawi, with the top two moving on to the semi-finals. Australia, South Africa, Wales and England will contest Pool F, which will decide the other two semi-finalists. Sunshine Girls head coach, Minneth Reynolds, told The Gleaner in a telephone interview that although the team was disappointed after their loss to England, the Girls remain resolute and are even more determined and focused on their goal. “The focus has remained the same although they lost to England. We were a bit disappointed at first, but they (Sunshine Girls) are still on a mission, so we bounced back against the Scottish,” she said. “They probably put more into the Scotland game because they wanted to prove to themselves that they are worthy contenders and that we can compete at our best at anytime,” she continued. A win over New Zealand this morning would put the Jamaicans in pole position to win their qualification group and set a likely semi-final date with England. That is if things go according to plan and Australia win Pool F. Prior to the match, Reynolds said they intended to win against New Zealand and top the group. “We are looking forward to New Zealand; we know it’s going to be a very tough game, but we are sticking to the task. Our attack will have to be penetrative, and we cannot stop at anything, we just have to be strong. “We want to win this game and all the games in the group. It’s important to win all your games, as winning your games only strengthens your confidence of getting to the final. So the objective is to win, and that is what is expected, and the Girls are looking forward to go out there, compete and win,” she continued. “The belief is still alive, the determination and the confidence is still there, and we are definitely going for gold, so we are going out to play our best, and we will be going very hard,” added Reynolds. In other matches yesterday, Wales beat Uganda 49-47, Fiji beat Zambia 59-51, South Africa beat Sri Lanka 89-17.
The Gunners could end the weekend 14 points adrift of Leicester City 1 Arsene Wenger has conceded Arsenal’s current form means they are looking over their shoulder in the Premier League – even if he insists his side can still win the title. The Gunners have crashed out of the FA Cup and Champions League in the last week and are on a run of one win in eight games across all competitions. They travel to Goodison Park to face Everton on Saturday lunchtime and, if results go against them this weekend, Wenger’s side could be 14 points adrift of Premier League leaders Leicester.Wenger, whose contract expires at the end of next season, admits it is a real possibility and will be keeping a wary eye on the chasing pack.“Yes of course. It’s very tight,” he replied when asked if he needs to be looking over his shoulder at the likes of City, West Ham and Manchester United.“But I believe the Premier League is far from over. We also have to look behind us because things can change very quickly. We want to move forward, but I’m conscious that our position is not secure, even where we are.“Things will change until the end of the season, that’s for sure. We have to take care of our own destiny, and that’s by producing the performances we expect from ourselves.“We are in a position where we hope for the best. I agree that a negative result (at Everton) would be very bad for us, but we focus on a positive result. We know now is the time for us to produce the result we want.”Wenger believes the strength throughout the Premier League is continuing to have an effect on how English teams deal with continental competitions – with Manchester City the only representatives in the quarter-final stages of the Champions League and Liverpool the sole remaining club in the Europa League. When asked about the lack of Premier League clubs in Friday’s draws, Wenger said: “It’s not good enough.“But it’s very difficult to give you a rational explanation. The Premier League is very demanding. Overall, the Premier League will be even stronger next season, that’s for sure, again.“Maybe the Premier League has become the Champions League for the English teams. That’s what is happening. Every game is so difficult in the Premier League that we maybe suffer a bit in Europe. Some teams who play in the Europa League prioritise the Premier League.”

Spud and his Crazy 8 gang. The Guv and Spud share a moment.(Images: Spud: The Movie)MEDIA CONTACTS • Trevor CrightonPublicist+27 83 652 7713April McAlisterBased on the best-selling book series by John van de Ruit, Spud: The Movie hits the South African circuit on 3 December 2010 and is billed as a film not to be missed. The first Spud novel became an instant hit, breaking all South African publishing records in 2005, and recently came in as number 11 on Exclusive Books’ list of 101 Books to Read Before You Die.Two more Spuds have followed since then, with another one in the pipeline. The first book sold over 200 000 copies, with an estimated readership of 600 000 in South Africa alone. It launched internationally in 2007 to great acclaim and has been published in the US, Italy, Russia, Brazil, the UK, India, and other Commonwealth countries. The film, which is set to launch internationally in February 2011, was produced by Cape Town-based Rogue Star Films and BLM Productions in Durban, and premiered at selected cinemas in November.Coming of ageThe 13-year-old John Milton wins a cricket scholarship and enrolls at Michaelhouse, a prestigious all-boys boarding school where author Van de Ruit spent his secondary school years, in the year 1990.With Nelson Mandela’s release imminent, this is a time of change for his country as well as for the boy. The school, and his odd new assortment of friends, prove to be daunting and challenging.Milton is nicknamed Spud because of his late development, but despite this unfortunate situation he manages to attract the attention of the opposite sex. Dealing with strange emotions causes a few awkward moments and results in hard decisions. An only child who suffers from dysfunctional middle class parents, a senile granny and a domestic worker who has more sense than his parents, Spud faces some embarrassing but hilarious situations.Fresh from his role as young Logan in the blockbuster X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 14-year-old Troye Sivan, South African-born and now living in Australia, plays the title role. His experience as Oliver in a theatre production proved useful as Spud lands the lead role in the school production of Oliver under the guidance of the burly Viking, his drama teacher. His friends, known as The Crazy 8, run the gamut from the subdued to gregarious, with names like Mad Dog, Boggo, Gecko, Rambo and Fatty. We are led through the fast-paced trials of teenage boys and the mischievous stunts they perform. The role of the Guv, a cantankerous and eccentric English teacher, was given to none other than British film veteran John Cleese, who is perfectly cast. The Guv soon spots Spud’s talent for writing and recognises something of himself in the lad. A bond forms between the two and they share memorable lunchtimes discussing women while the Guv consumes copious quantities of wine.In an interview Cleese said that he thoroughly enjoyed working on Spud and would do it again if the producers decide on a sequel.“The last time that I saw a script that I liked as much as this was in 1995 for Clockwise,” he said.Local talentThe rest of the cast is drawn from local talent. All but one of the Crazy 8 gang are pupils from local schools, and the eighth is studying for a degree in theatre and performance at Cape Town University.Lehasa Moloi plays PJ Luthuli, the head of house, who commands respect and is Spud’s hero figure. Luthuli is aware of the political significance of the goings-on around him and helps Spud to see the darker side of South African history.Debbie “the Mermaid”, who steals Spud’s heart forever, is played by young Genna Blair; Charlbi Dean is Amanda, who seduces Spud; and Tanit Phoenix plays the sultry Eve, the housemaster’s wife.Adaptation of the novel for the big screen began in 2008 when Rogue Star Films founder Ross Garland brought writer/director Donovan Marsh onto the project. The team has worked closely with Van de Ruit, which has helped them to keep the high-paced script true to the story of Spud.Rogue Star has produced other notable films such as U-Carmen eKhayelitsha, a modern-day African version of Bizet’s dramatic 19th century opera Carmen. U-Carmen eKhayalitsha scooped the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival and was in the selection at the Cannes Film Festival Tous les Cinemas du Monde, Toronto Film Festival, London Film Festival, Ebert Film Festival, Dublin Film Festival and the Pusan Film Festival.Films like Neill Blomkamp’s Oscar-nominated District 9, Regardt van den Berg’s Faith Like Potatoes and Jann Turner’s White Wedding have been received well locally and internationally, showing that the calibre of the filmmaking industry is on the up.Spud and White Wedding both show that South Africans have the ability to laugh at themselves in an easy manner and are able to see the humorous side to life in most respects. With world-class crew and production companies, and local talent such as Troye Sivan, Sharlto Copley, Rapulana Seiphemo, Arnold Vosloo and Frank Rautenbach, South Africa’s film sector is proving to be competitive and more in demand than ever before.

A Kashmiri college student helping a friend write an article gave up after repeatedly trying to get Kolkata’s Kashmiris to speak. They refused to talk, the student said.“Even my father refused to talk about the nature of fear that has gripped us over the last week,” the student said on condition of anonymity, adding, “Please do not disclose my gender. I do not want to be the reason of trouble for my family and for Kashmiris.” The few hundred Kashmiris in Kolkata have experienced unprecedented hostility over the last week.“An absurd number of hate messages have flooded Facebook. Kashmiri women are issued rape threats, men are threatened with lynching and attacks on their families,” the student said, showing screenshots of hate messages. One of the screenshots notes that a similar “number of [a slang] Kashmiris are available in Bengal,” indicating that the Pulwama terror attack could be avenged in Kolkata. In the past one week, a prominent doctor has been threatened, a shawl seller was brutally beaten in Nadia district, another was threatened in Lalbag in Murshidabad, while other cases are reported but could not be verified. In Lalbag, both the accused and the victim, the shawl seller, were arrested. Many are surprised that Kashmiris in the city are not speaking up. “The reason is because it is a tiny group,” said Sabir Ahamed, organiser of a community-based campaign to diffuse communal tension, Know Your Neighbour. “The other factor, however, is even more distressing. As soon as a news report is published, people equipped to create trouble are digging out names, locations and even house numbers of the threatened persons, analysing data and issuing more threats. So media reports that are casually disclosing identities are not helping in any way,” Mr. Ahamed said. The student said news of attacks on Kashmiri traders in the city and “the Muslim-Kashmiri identity” was also a reason. They never expected “such behavior” in Kolkata as many have been living in Kolkata for generations.A Kashmiri housewife said she is planning to leave the city for Hyderabad, “because the politics of Bengal has some form of bloodiness in it, at least before the elections.” She said, “Many of our friends and cousins are trying to move to southern States. We have heard that there are fewer or no threats to Kashmiris in south. Perhaps women are safer in Karnataka compared to Bengal.”However, one Kashmiri, a government servant in Srinagar on a visit to Kolkata, said that he is not too keen to return to his home State before the scheduled date of departure.

Nick Foles hit Golden Tate with a 2-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 56 seconds remaining against the NFL’s stingiest defense, lifting the Philadelphia Eagles past the Chicago Bears 16-15 on Sunday in the final wild-card game.Former Eagles kicker Cody Parkey hit the left upright and then the crossbar with a field-goal attempt from 43 yards with 10 seconds remaining, silencing the raucous crowd.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSUrgent reply from Philippine football chiefSPORTSSEA Games: Biñan football stadium stands out in preparedness, completionThe key, of course, was how the Eagles, even when they are messing up, never give up. On Parkey’s kick, several Eagles said defensive tackle Treyvon Hester touched it.“I think the big thing is, we saw some adversity tonight in the first half (and) I had a couple of turnovers,” Foles said. “I think the big thing is that no one loses faith, no one stops believing, everyone just keeps talking, keeps believing in one another, and we just rallied. Chicago led the NFL this season with 36 takeaways.MASCOT REACTIONChicago’s bear mascot had the perfect reaction to Parkey’s miss, falling flat on his back as he was kneeling behind the goalpost where Parkey’s kick failed.UP NEXTEagles: Travel to New Orleans, where they lost 48-7 during the season. No team has repeated as Super Bowl champion since New England in 2004, and the Eagles are a sixth seed. The last sixth seed to win the NFL title was Green Bay in the 2010 season; the Packers won the NFC championship at Soldier Field that season. These Eagles, led by Foles once again replacing an injured Carson Wentz, and a defense down to backups at several positions, seem to have that magical touch like last season. It was a sizzling ending to a game marked by superior defense and several critical mistakes by the Eagles. They had to survive after Tarik Cohen, an All-Pro punt returner, took back the kickoff following Philly’s go-ahead score 35 yards. Mitchell Trubisky completed two passes to get the Bears close enough for Parkey. But his kick took a double deflection and fell harmlessly into the end zone.He was 11 of 12 in the fourth-quarter on field goals before missing the biggest kick of his career.“Obviously, we’re just hoping for a miss,” Foles said. “This was a hard-fought game. That’s an amazing team we just played against and it came down to the wire.”The Bears are 1-15 all-time in playoffs when trailing after three quarters. They fell behind when Foles connected with rookie Dallas Goedert for a 10-yard touchdown in the third period that was set up by a 33-yard pass interference call on cornerback Prince Amukamara.Although the Eagles outplayed the Bears in the first half, errors left them behind 6-3. A 15-yard personal penalty on Michael Bennett aided Chicago’s drive to a 36-yard field goal by Parkey, and a dropped potential interception in the end zone by Tre Sullivan allowed Parkey to make a 29-yarder as the half concluded.Philadelphia also had an interception by Avonte Maddox deep in Chicago territory overturned by video replay.Philly did score on its opening series of the game, a 50-yard drive to Jake Elliott’s 43-yard field goal. And again on its first possession in the third quarter as Goedert got wide open on a short post pattern behind Adrian Amos, who had an end-zone interception of Foles’ ill-advised throw in the second quarter.Parkey also made 34-yarder early in the manic final quarter. That’s why we play this game for times like now once you get to January and February.”Philly plays at New Orleans (13-3) next Sunday. Chicago’s sensational turnaround season from last place to the NFC North title is over.“We wanted to write our story and start it off,” Bears second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky said. “But it does not always go the way you want it to, and that’s life, that’s football.”ADVERTISEMENT “Yeah, it wasn’t very good the first time,” Pederson said. “I think we’re a different football team now than we were then.” Don’t miss out on the latest news and information.
